Abstract:

The mathematical model of laser beam melting of stainless steel is presented in the paper. It is shown that process of melting is mainly controlled by value of surface tension. For the majority of steels the surface tension is closely related to the content of sulphur. Calculations were carried out for several contents of sulphur and for various melting speeds using the finite element program FLUENT.
